DESCRIPTION:Bruno's life\nBorn in Cologne\, Germany in 1030\, he studied th
eology in Rheims before returning home to be ordained in 1055. He became h
ead of the school at Reims\, leading the school until becoming chancellor
of the diocese in 1075. He had a dream\, however\, of living in solitude a
nd prayer\, and persuaded some others to join him in a hermitage in the Ch
artreuse Mountains. \nAfter living as a hermit for several years\, Bruno
was forced to leave to help a former pupil\, now Pope Urban II\, remaining
in Italy until he was released to return. During this time he befriend
ed a Count who granted Bruno and the monks some land “in the Chartreus
e”\, where the climate\, terrain and inaccessibility guaranteed silence\
, poverty and small numbers. \nHere he established the Carthusian Order\,
based on ascetism\, poverty and prayer\, combining the solitary life of h
ermits with the collective life of conventional monks. They built an orato
ry with small cells at a distance from each other. Monks met for Matins an
d Vespers each day\, eating alone except for the great feasts and spending
the rest of the time in solitude. Their main work was copying manuscripts
 . \nBruno died on October 6\, 1101.  \nSayings\nSome statements for whi
ch he is remembered include:\n“While the world changes\, the cross stand
s firm”.\n"Only those who have experienced the solitude and the silence
of the wilderness can know the benefit and divine joy they bring to those
who love them”.\n“No act is charitable if it is not just”.\n“By yo
ur work you show what you love and what you know”. \nPrayer of Saint Br
uno\n\nO God\, merciful Father\, who called Saint Bruno to the solitude of
the desert to found the Carthusian Order\; We ask that through this inter
cession you free us from the sorrows of this world and grant us the gift o
f peace and spiritual joy that you have promised to those who persevere in
seeking you. Amen.\n\nExtra resources\nA two minute summary of his life c
an be read at Angelus Saint of the Day.\nThis Reflection comes from the F
ranciscan media site which also includes an audio of Bruno's story:\n"If t
here is always a certain uneasy questioning of the contemplative life\, th
ere is an even greater puzzlement about the extremely penitential combinat
ion of community and hermit life lived by the Carthusians. May we mirror B
runo’s quest for holiness and unity with God."\nHere are some YouTube li
