Dear sisters and brothers,
Over the course of the last couple of weeks we have watched the unfolding flood disaster that has impacted many communities in the far west of our Diocese. At one stage an area twice the size of Victoria was underwater. People had to be evacuated from properties and small towns at very short notice and they have lost much.
There is a growing estimate of the stock lost, the fences destroyed, and the roads damaged but it is not possible yet to have an accurate sense of the damage because of continuing water inundation. Bishop Cam has been in touch with many people and has helpfully written the attached Flood Prayer for private and public use. He will be visiting some of the impacted areas during Holy Week and hopes to have a clearer sense of how people are going, and how best we can help after that visit.
For now, Bishop Cam has recommended that we financially support these flood impacted communities through Rural Aid Home - Rural Aid - Supporting Rural Communities. This organisation was established in 2015 and has done wonderful work since that time. Bishop Cam assures me that he has ‘never heard a bad word said against them!’
I invite you to join me in praying for these flood-impacted communities, and in financially supporting their recovery through Rural Aid.
Yours in Christ
The Most Reverend Jeremy Greaves KCSJ
Archbishop of Brisbane
